RTI NDDS middleware powers the data distribution for CAE's next generation full flight simulators
ORLANDO, Fl.—December 2, 2002—CAE, one of the world's leading providers of simulation and training, today announced that their new CAE SimXXI full flight simulators (FFSs) are powered by NDDS publish-subscribe middleware from RTI. The CAE SimXXI architecture uses NDDS for real-time communications between the simulator subsystems.
CAE SimXXI (twenty-one) is designed with an innovative modular software architecture that increases software reusability and reduces software maintenance costs. As such, RTI's NDDS is an integral part of the software architecture. CAE SimXXI uses industry standard components such as Intel® Pentium® PC-based computer systems and Microsoft® Windows®-based operating systems. For communications between simulator subsystems, CAE Sim XXI uses NDDS over high-bandwidth IEEE-1394. "In the past we probably would have developed an expensive, proprietary system for data communications", said Peter Jarvis, Chief Designer for CAE's Civil Simulation & Training division, "but by using NDDS were able to deliver a proven, reliable and cost effective solution to our customers."
Other factors attributed to NDDS's adoption by CAE, including its availability for a wide variety of computing platforms, the modularity of a middleware application and its simple yet powerful application programming interface (API). "We not only needed low-latency data transfers between simulator components but also a software communications infrastructure that is simple to use and integrate", states Jarvis.
NDDS Middleware and WaveWorks Tools
NDDS is publish-subscribe network middleware designed specifically for distributed, real-time applications. It uses the standard UDP interface provided by the operating system vendor to distribute data. The publish-subscribe application programming model eliminates network programming and is easy to learn and manage. In addition to NDDS, Real-Time Innovations provides powerful distributed system development tools. WaveScope provides a real-time view into NDDS operation to optimize application performance.
