Reduces software lifecycle costs by extending DDS standard's loose coupling
SAN JOSE, CA, Embedded Systems Conference—March 31, 2009—Real-Time Innovations (RTI), The Real-Time Middleware Experts, announced today the release of version 4.4 of RTI Data Distribution Service, the market-leading implementation of the Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard. New capabilities in 4.4 reduce software lifecycle costs by making it easier to insert new technology into already deployed distributed real-time applications. Version 4.4 also eases integration of real-time and embedded applications utilizing RTI Data Distribution Service with applications using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) based Enterprise middleware such as Web Services.
"RTI Data Distribution Service is being used in systems that will be deployed for as long as 30 years," commented Edwin de Jong, RTI's director of core product management and strategy. "These systems' architects recognized that RTI Data Distribution Service and the DDS standard provide significant cost savings by decoupling the underlying subsystems and applications—which can number in the thousands. New features in our 4.4 release extend this benefit by making it easier to insert new technology and capabilities that interoperate seamlessly with already deployed components."
With RTI Data Distribution Service 4.4, the interfaces that applications use to communicate with each other can be dynamically defined, updated and discovered at runtime rather than at compile time. As a result, systems can evolve to accommodate new functionality without breaking interoperability and backward compatibility. Already developed application code does not have to be updated and bridges are not required between new and legacy components. This significantly reduces development and upgrade costs.
Similarly, more options are provided for post-deployment modification of Quality of Service (QoS) configuration. For example, as systems scale, data rates increase and new networking technology is adopted, the protocol used to send data can be tuned to optimize network performance and partitioning based on the current deployment environment. These configuration changes do not require recompilation of application source code.
RTI Data Distribution Service 4.4 also eases integration with other middleware. Interfaces can be defined using XML, allowing developers to use common interface definitions for real-time and embedded applications that use RTI Data Distribution Service and other middleware that supports XML. By compiling XML interfaces into efficient code at development time, RTI eliminates the otherwise increased message size and processing demands typically associated with transmitting and parsing XML at runtime. RTI supports two XML styles: a concise DDS specific format and XML Schema (XSD), including XSD definitions embedded in Web Services Description Language (WSDL) documents. Support for standard WSDL allows sharing of a single definition by DDS and Web Services-based integrations. Support for XML also allows developers to leverage XML aware tools, including design tools and editors.
Availability and Pricing
RTI Data Distribution Service 4.4 is generally available today for Linux and Microsoft Windows platforms. A trial can be downloaded from http://www.rti.com/downloads/dds.html.
The 4.4 release is currently in Beta for IBM's AIX and Sun's Solaris operating systems; and Green Hills Software's INTEGRITY, LynuxWorks' LynxOS, Microsoft's Windows CE, QNX and Wind River Systems' VxWorks embedded and real-time operating systems (RTOS). General availability on these platforms is planned for the second quarter of 2009.
Licenses are free-of-charge for most research, non-profit, education and internally funded Independent Research and Development (IR&D) purposes; details can be found at http://www.rti.com/downloads/dds-research.html. For commercial use, an annual subscription of RTI Data Distribution Service 4.4 is $21,150 for three developers. This includes technical support and libraries for all standard supported platforms.
